Fulgencia Paniagua, a farmer at the South Central Farm. Photo by Nic Paget-Clarke.

Fulgencia Paniagua, a farmer at the South Central Farm, takes a short break from care of her family's plot. Over 300 families grow vegetables, fruits and other plants on 14 acres in South Central Los Angeles. Thought to be the largest urban farm in the U.S., the South Central Farm was established in 1992 after the city acquired the land by eminent domain then did not use the land as they had planned and transferred the land to a local food bank. Currently, though, the farmers face an eviction notice (posted 3/1/2006). For a complete history visit the South Central Farmers' web site at www.southcentralfarmers.com. Photo by Nic Paget-Clarke.
